Fr. Omar Pitman Our Interim Canon Missioner
Our current Interim Cannon Missioner is Fr. Omar Pitman. Fr. Omar, as he likes to be called, began his spiritual leadership roll for our Central Convocation Partnership in Mission on January 1, 2006. Fr. Omar was born August 26, 1933 and grew up in Big Spring, Texas. He received his B.A. degree from the New Mexico Military Institute and a Masters of Divinity degree from the General Theological Seminary in New York City. He was ordained as a deacon in 1957 and later a priest on February 4, 1958. Fr, Omar has served in churches in New Mexico and Pennsylvania and has also served as associate rector at St Luke’s Episcopal Church right here in San Antonio for thirteen and a half years before retiring on September 1, 2005. Fr. Omar married Mary Ellen Engels, from San Bernadino, California on November 27, 1965. They have two children, a son David (38), and a daughter, Margaret (32). Fr. Omar and Mary are blessed with two grandsons, Matthew (5) and Nace (4 ½).
Fr. Omar has been living in San Antonio for the past 29 years He and Mary enjoy the weather here. When he is not attending to church duties, he loves to read mysteries and work crossword puzzles. He says that it helps to keep Alzheimer's away! He and Mary love to travel but with his busy schedule he has been keeping, they have not been able to do much of it. The Partnership is his first priority at the moment. Fr Omar and Mary will continue to look foreward to traveling more in the near future. His goal for the future is to one day “really totally retire”, enjoy his family and watch his grandchildren grow up. Fr. Omar says, “The church is the central part of my life". He grew up in the Episcopal Church, and has always been active in church, beginning with serving as an acolyte when he was young. Our Central Convocation Partnership in Mission is blessed to have Fr. Omar and Mary with us.
